The old putting a plain text field in the content type and doing the render is still the way to go with this one.
Media was a big sticking point in the early Wordpress Wars.
Wordpress had a media gallery and Drupal still just did uploads.
The modules were also a hairy mess that ate more than a few of my builds.
This is good module, and Media is now in core.
